Do you feel anxious when visiting the dentist? Have you been avoiding the dentist for some time due to fear and anxiety?
Without routine visits to the dentist office, patients can face gum disease, oral cancers, and missing teeth. Dental anxiety is one of the leading factors in poor oral health among adults today. Many patients suffer with complex dental problems that can affect their daily quality of life due to a fear of visiting the dentist. Avoiding the dentist can cause many costly issues down the road. Periodontal disease treatment and dental implants from missing teeth can cost a person thousands of dollars.
Beautiful Smiles, a dentist office in the Indianapolis, IN and is run by Dr. David W. Goris, offers a safe, judgement free office. He will first want to meet with you to get to know you and learn more about your fears. A comprehensive exam and consultation with Dr. Goris will allow him to determine which sedation option will be best for you. Choosing a sedation method will be determined by your overall health, personal preference and what treatments you require. Dr. Goris will explain the benefits of each method so that you may make an informed decision.

Sedation Dentistry What to Expect
Sedation Dentistry Options
Topical & Local Anesthesia – A topical solution is used to ‘pre-numbs’ the injection area and local anesthesia is used to completely numb the area being treated. This temporarily blocks feeling to the nerve and should last one to two hours or longer.
Nitrous Oxide Gas – Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is administered through a mask that delivers an odorless gas which relaxes and calms you. The effects of nitrous oxide work really fast and are totally reversible. Patients are in control of their bodily functions and can respond to the staff, but are completely relaxed and most likely will not remember their treatment. Nitrous oxide is considered to be a safe sedation method for dental work.
Oral Conscious Sedation – This option is administered in pill form. Oral sedation will enable you to be responsive and in control of your bodily functions while feeling completely relaxed throughout your procedure. This type of sedation may take several hours to completely wear off and patients will need to arrange for transportation after treatment. Most patients will have no memory of their dental procedure.
With most forms of sedation, patients will require a ride to and from our Indianapolis area dentist office. While nitrous oxide wears off quickly, it is still most commonly safer to avoid driving immediately after treatment. Oral conscious sedation may take several hours to fully wear off, and an escort will be mandatory.
